Yesterday morning on my way to my out for an appointment, i got accosted and harrased by men in uniform who asked me to empty my pockets, open my laptop bag and they searched my hair to toe. They asked for my flash drive which i produced. The then said, they were going to view the content of my flash in their station and they asked me to enter the commercial vehicle they put on the road to raid people.
They drove round so many joints to pick up other men, beer palor, gambling joint, motels and sandwiched all of us inside the vehicle. I was so angry and you know, calm as well. You never know what these men can do. We were then taken to the station and one of them took me aside to inspect my laptop and usb flash drive content and found nothing incriminating. He then asked me to go back and join the other men who have been put in a little cell.
My sister’s husband had come then and asked for my release. The policemen asked him how he intend to bail me out for no offence. This is exactly what they do everyday, go about raiding people and then asking for a bail which never goes into the account of the government. We insisted on not giving them anything, they later released me after wasting about 2 hours of my day.
They did not make my day a happy one. I also noticed their regretable ignorance of the computer. I recommend that the government need to educate the police force in the area of computer literacy. They should also be well paid, may be it will settle their hunger for “bail money”.
This is the menace we face with men in uniform today. Now we can’t walk freely with laptops, we have to be afraid of hoodlums and policemen. If you were in my shoes, what would you have done when accosted by policemen and then asked to follow them to the station?
